Máxima's father still anathema to Dutch left

Published on 13 October 2011 - 9:41am
More about:

The Labour Party is against Princess Máxima’s father attending the investiture of Prince Willem-Alexander. Labour Party MP Jeroen Recourt told the TV programme Nieuwsuur it would not be proper.

Last year Labour leader Job Cohen said that, after all these years, Jorge Zorreguieta should ‘perhaps’ be allowed to attend. He was agriculture minister during the military dictatorship in Argentina, when opponents of the regime were ‘disappeared’. Recently, charges were filed against Mr Zorreguieta once again for alleged complicity in the disappearances.

The Socialist Party has already spoken out against the presence of Princess Máxima’s father on official occasions. In view of the controversy, he was not invited to attend his daughter’s marriage to Prince Willem-Alexander. He does however pay unofficial visits to the Netherlands to see his grandchildren.

The issue will be discussed in parliament today during the continued debate about the status and future of the royal family.
