Starting Saturday 30 July, Amsterdam will be hosting the 16th edition of its Amsterdam Gay Pride event.
The theme of this year’s Amsterdam Pride is 'All together now'. Organiser ProGay says everybody should do their best to put Amsterdam back on the map as Gay Capital.
The Pride event will last nine days, longer than ever before. Activities for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders are being organised at various locations across the city.
The high point of Pride will be the traditional Canal Parade which will be held next Saturday. It will feature some 80 boats, including the first-ever Defence department boat featuring gay soldiers in uniform and, also for the first time, a Hindustani boat.
Education Minister Marja van Bijsterveldt will be attending the festivities. The announcement was met with fierce criticism because she has refused to sack public officials who refuse to marry same-sex couples. However, the COC gay rights organisation says she is welcome, adding it would try to convince her to change her mind.
