Leftwing parties protest against poverty

Published on 10 December 2011 - 6:27pm
More about:

Leftwing parties and trades unions have gathered in the southern city of Den Bosh to protest against the conservative government’s budget cuts in social security, sheltered workshops and other services.

The event, called “Poverty doesn’t work”, has been organised by the Socialist Party. SP leader Emile Roemer will address the gathering along with Labour leader Job Cohen. It is not yet known how many people attended the meeting. Last year it drew over 1,000 people.

The SP accuses the conservative minority cabinet of making people with a disability pay for the crisis. The party wants the government to drop its budget cuts immediately. Otherwise, the SP warns, tens of thousands will lose what income they have and drop below the poverty line. Or they will be given jobs that pay less than the official minimum wages.
