A foundation hoping to act on behalf of tens of thousands of Turkish citizens who wanted to emigrate to the Netherlands says it will sue the Dutch state for more than 100 million euros’ worth of damages.
Over the past few years, tens of thousands of Turks have taken part in integration courses that formed a precondition to obtaining Dutch residence permits. A few weeks ago, Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner scrapped the precondition because it constituted a violation of the association treaty between Turkey and the European Union.
The Integration Misery Foundation says many of the potential immigrants spent thousands of euros on travelling expenses and exam fees. In some cases, marriages had to be cancelled when a candidate failed to pass the exam.
More than 1,000 people have registered with the foundation so far. It aims to register at least 30,000 claimants. The individual claims vary between 1,500 and 5,000 euros, depending on travel and study expenses incurred.
