One of Kenya’s most senior politicians, Uhuru Kenyatta, will stand trial for murder and crimes against humanity at the ICC in The Hague.
The charges against Kenya’s deputy prime minister and presidential hopeful were confirmed this morning by the International Criminal Court.
Charges against three other senior Kenyan figures were also confirmed by ICC judges and all four will now face trial for their roles in bloody post-election unrest in 2008, in which 1,100 people died.
Charges against two other men, Henry Kosgey and Muhammed Hussein Ali, were dismissed by the court. In a written decision, it announced it was not persuaded by the prosecutor’s evidence. In particular, the prosecutor relied on one anonymous witness whose testimony was not corroborated.
No trial date was set and the four accused men are expected to appeal against today’s decision.
