Iranians "smuggled into Europe via Amsterdam"

Published on 8 October 2010 - 9:49am
More about:

Police at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport have said they arrested nine individuals on suspicion of people trafficking. They allegedly smuggled at least four Iranians into the European Union.

A police spokesperson said on Friday that some of the suspects, aged between 17 and 51, have Iranian nationality. They were arrested over the past few weeks in the cities of Amsterdam, Almere and Heerlen. Three homes and a café in Amsterdam were searched, yielding three loaded firearms, 36,000 euros in cash and a number of computers. Two of the suspects remain in detention; the others have been released but are still considered suspects.

Airport police also announced that ten people were arrested over the past weeks for drugs trafficking via Schiphol Airport. One of the suspects is an airport employee.
