India to draw on Dutch water know-how

Published on 8 June 2011 - 9:38am
More about:

The Netherlands is to cooperate with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a subsidiary of the World Bank, on improving the efficiency of agricultural and industrial water use in India, the IFC has announced.

The IFC’s partnership with the Dutch Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation ministry is aimed at promoting private investment.

India is heading for a water crisis, says the IFC. More than 80 percent of all water is used in agriculture, and in large areas of the country there is a shortage of drinking water.

“Water is a complex and challenging development priority for India,” says the IFC’s Anil Sinha. “By reducing water waste and improving quality and access, the project will benefit industry, farmers, and households.”

Dutch water management expertise can make an important contribution to solving India’s problems, the IFC says. Water is one of five priority themes in Dutch development cooperation policy.
