Published on 24 April 2011 - 10:47am
More about:

Former Dutch foreign minister and diplomat Max van der Stoel has died aged 86.

After twice serving as foreign minister in the 1970s and '80s, Mr Van der Stoel took up the position of the Netherlands' ambassador to the United Nations, where he strengthened his reputation as a champion of human rights. In 1991, he was granted the honorary title of Minister of State.

He then served as the first High Commissioner on National Minorities at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a job he would hold for seven years.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in a statement that the Netherlands "has lost a human rights icon".
