The number of newly diagnosed cases of cancer will rise to 123,000 a year by 2020, compared to 87,000 in 2007. The number of successfully treated patients will rise from 420,000 in 2007 to 660,000 in 2020.
These are the conclusions of a report - Cancer in the Netherlands until 2020 - published by Dutch cancer charity KWF Kankerbestrijding.
The charity writes that the main cause of the predicted increase is the ageing population: cancer is most common at a later age. KWF Kankerbestrijding warns the public healthcare authorities that they need to make preparations for the growing number of cancer patients.
KWF argues that psycho-social care should also be improved and more attention should be paid to cancer prevention.
