Holland thrash San Marino in Euro 2012 qualifier

Published on 2 September 2011 - 10:47pm
More about:

The Netherlands have thrashed San Marino 11-0 in a Euro 2012 group E match. The Dutch currently head the football rankings while San Marino are truly the underdogs at the bottom of the table.

The first half ended 3-0 in the PSV stadium in Eindhoven - which is big enough to accommodate the entire San Marino population.

Scoring was opened in the sixth minute by Robin van Persie, followed six minutes later by Wesley Sneijder and John Heitinga in the 17th minute. But the scoring ground to a halt as the Dutch missed a number of opportunities to increase their lead.

In the second half, the Dutch machine got back in gear. Two minutes after the break, Dirk Kuyt flicked the ball in the net, followed by a goal from Klaas Jan Huntelaar putting the score at five.

Robin van Persie scored for a second and third time within just a couple of minutes. With 15 minutes to go, Huntelaar doubled his tally. And not long later Van Persie slid another ball into the left corner of the net.

And with just three minutes before the whistle, Wesley Sneijder, netted goal number ten. But even then it wasn't game over as substitute Georginio Wijnaldum put the final score at 11-0.
