Helicopter searching underground fires

Published on 5 June 2011 - 12:23pm
More about:

A police helicopter fitted with heat sensors has been scouring the eastern nature reserve devastated by forest fires for embers still smouldering underground.

The fire in the Twente region began on Friday and since then has destroyed over 100 hectares of peatland, 30 of them across the German border.

Extinguishing the fire was hampered by strong winds and the difficult terrain.

Fire fighters are now inspecting sites with visible smoke.

A spokesperson said no flames could be seen on Sunday morning.

Fire fighters are not sure whether the smoke is being caused by the extinguished blaze or embers still burning underground.

Some 90 fire fighters are still involved in the operation
