Heavy rains cause flooding in the Netherlands

Published on 13 July 2011 - 9:12am
More about:

Heavy rains caused flooding in North Brabant and Utrecht Tuesday. The Dutch fire department reported over 275 incidents during the deluge, which lasted most of the day and night.

The majority of reports included flooded basements and wind-blown trees. However, water levels in some areas rose so high that manhole covers came lose. Fire fighters worked well into the night resolving the issues.

In Utrecht, flooding in the Diakonessenhuis hospital basement threatened to cut the facility’s power supply. Fire fighters prevented this by pumping out the rain water.
