The US authorities have arrested 16 alleged hackers suspected of launching a cyber attack on the website of the PayPal company in December. A group of hackers known as Anonymous allegedly attacked the PayPal online payment site because it shut down a donation account for the WikiLeaks whistle-blowing website.
A joint announcement by the US Justice Department and the FBI states the arrests were made in collaboration with the British and Dutch police. Four suspects were arrested in the Netherlands and one in the United Kingdom.
In the US, 14 suspects are accused of conspiring to "intentionally damage protected computers" between 6 and 10 December in what Anonymous called 'Operation Avenge Assange'. The remaining two detainees were arrested for similar offences. The US authorities emphasise that the arrests were made in an ongoing investigation.
