Growing demand for sustainable energy

Published on 17 January 2012 - 3:07pm
More about:

Dutch consumption of power produced from sustainable energy sources is growing by leaps and bounds.

National grid operatior TenneT says its records show a 22-percent increase over the past year. "This is equal to the energy consumption of 1.5 million households,” a TenneT spokesperson said on Tuesday.

As it is impossible to tell what kind of power a wall socket supplies just by looking at it, certificates are issued for each megawatt-hour of electricity produced from renewable energy sources.

These certificates are ‘cancelled' by TenneT when the power has actually been supplied to households, businesses and other users. The number of cancelled certificates rose to 33.5 million in 2011.
