Group of 26 countries oppose EU carbon tax

Published on 30 September 2011 - 9:53pm
More about:

India, China, the United States and 23 other countries plan to formally protest a charge on airline carbon emissions from the European Union. According to a joint statement released Friday, they will voice their dissent at a November meeting of the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The European Commission wants flights coming into and out of Europe in 2012 to purchase permits from their Emissions Trading Scheme for 15 percent of the carbon emissions they produce. The move is an effort to fight the effects of climate change including crop failures, droughts and flooding.

Critics from the opposing countries call the measure “discriminatory” and contrary to international regulations. However, a spokesperson for the commission said the EU supports the introduction of similar efforts by other countries.
