The Dutch branch of Greenpeace is angry at Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV) for claiming that the organisation was endangering people’s lives with a protest action against a nuclear transport.
Greenpeace campaign director Joris Thijssen comments:
“The right to protest is a constitutional right. We would have expected the PVV to be on our side. It’s very strange to hear the PVV saying you can’t express your opinion.”
PVV MP Richard de Mos attacked Greenpeace for digging a hole beneath the track, which he claimed could have endangered the nuclear train. Greenpeace activists were attempting to bury a balloon carrying a banner when they were arrested by the police. Greenpeace say the plan was that the balloon would inflate automatically at a time when the train was stationary.
The Christian Democrats (CDA), junior partner in the coalition government, also claimed Greenpeace had put lives at risk.
“If the PVV and the CDA are so worried about the danger of nuclear transports, perhaps they should abandon nuclear power and switch to clean energy sources.” Joris Thijssen added.
