Green Left tumbles in polls due to Afghan mission

Published on 30 January 2011 - 1:16pm
More about:

The four parties which voted in favour of sending a Dutch police training mission to Afghanistan last week have lost support from voters according by a poll by Maurice de Hond.

The Green Left, which led the opposition's demands to make substantial changes to the mission, has lost three seats in the opinion poll.

The conservative VVD, Christian Democrats and D66 all lost one seat in the internet poll which was held under 2500 people. The Christian Union which also supports the mission holds onto its five seats, and the Orthodox Christian SGP keeps its two seats.

Disappointed Green Left and D66 voters turned to the Labour Party, Socialist Party and the Animal Rights Party. The Freedom Party which opposed the mission outright gained another two seats in the poll, from angry Christian Democrat and VVD voters.
