Author Simon van der Geest has won the Gouden Griffel (Golden Pen), the annual prize for the best Dutch children’s book. The CPBN (Collective Promotion for the Dutch Book) awarded him the prize for Dissus his version of the Odyssey story.
The prize was awarded at the Children’s Book Ball in Amsterdam’s Music Building on the River IJ, which marks the start of the annual Children’s Book Week. This year’s theme is super heroes. Various activities are being organised in libraries and book shops until 15 October.
The jury praised Van der Geest's use of language, alliteration and rhythm. The book’s illustrator Jan Jutte was also praised – they said his use of old Greek black and red formed a link to the original.
