Gambia's Fatou Bensouda poised to head ICC

Published on 1 December 2011 - 11:22pm
More about:

Fatou Bensouda is now officially the only remaining candidate to succeed Louis Moreno Ocampo as chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The 50-year-old lawyer from Gambia is currently deputy to Moreno Ocampo, a position set to end next year.

Bensouda previously worked as legal advisor to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Tanzania. She was nominated by President of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP) Christian Wenaweser after months of consultations with the body’s 119 member countries.

The ICC was launched in 2002 as the world’s first permanent war crimes tribunal. The court’s new chief prosecutor will officially be selected during the annual ASP meeting in New York on 12 December.
