Freighter in Scheldt estuary pulled free

Published on 8 October 2011 - 5:18pm
More about:

An Argentinian freighter carrying hundreds of cars which ran aground in the Wester Scheldt estuary on Saturday was pulled free at high tide and is now en route to the port of Flushing.

The Repubblica Argentina had left Antwerp harbour on Friday, heading for Dakar. It is not clear what caused the cargo ship to get stuck in the Bath Narrows on its passage through Dutch waters. Shipping in the Scheldt was not affected because the freighter was outside the main lanes.

The Bath Narrows are a notorious tight spot. In 2003 and 2008 two container carriers got stranded, affecting shipping along Antwerp's vital artery.
