Former Dutch Nazi jailed

Published on 15 December 2011 - 2:22pm
More about:

A former member of the German Waffen SS organisation in World War II, Dutchman Heinrich Boere, has begun his life sentence.

He was found guilty last year by a court in the German city of Aachen of killing three Dutch citizens in 1944. Boere, who is 90, confessed to shooting them while he was a member of a German murder squad.

He fled to West Germany after World War II and was not brought to trial until 2009, after his appeal to be exempted on health grounds had been rejected. Following the verdict, Heinrich Boere was taken from the retirement home in Eschweiler where he lived to a prison ward in North Rhine Westphalia, according to German media.
