Football: Vitesse avert relegation

Published on 16 April 2011 - 10:15pm
More about:

Vitesse have scored a critical 2-1 victory over FC Groningen, averting relegation from the Premier League.

Danny Holla scored for Groningen on the 65th minute, with Wilfried Bony and Guram Kashia subsequently securing Vitesse’s important victory.

Roda JC beat VVV-Venlo 5-2, staying in the race for the fourth spot that guarantees participation in the Europa League.

Roda’s Mads Junker scored no less than three goals, bringing his total to 18. Roda’s two other goals were netted by Rob Wielaert and Pa Modou Kah.

It wasn’t until the closing phase that Michael Timisela and Michael Uchebo managed to score for VVV, who remain on 17th position, still at risk of relegation.

For the first time ever, Excelsior have defeated NAC Breda, who lost 1-2 at home.

To make matters worse, their defeat means that NAC almost certainly will not make it to the play-offs for a European ticket.

Roland Bergkamp and Guyon Fernandez scored for Excelsior, with Ali Boussaboun netting the brief equaliser in between.

AZ have won a 3-1 victory over ADO Den Haag, knocking them off the fourth spot that gives access to European football.

With three matches to go, AZ are now two points ahead of ADO.
