Football: top three teams all struggling

Published on 13 March 2011 - 7:55pm
More about:

FC Twente and Ajax struggled to win against the Premier League's weakest teams. FC Twente only beat VVV-Venlo, second from the bottom, thanks to a goal scored by Ola John in final phase.

And Ajax only defeated bottom-of-the-league Willem II 3-1 after netting two goals in the game's last ten minutes. And by then Willem II were a man down after replacement Denis Halilovic had been shown a red card.

Feyenoord too only succeeded in securing their 2-1 victory over NAC Breda in the match's closing stage. Early on Sunday, De Graafschap surprised with a 1-0 win over ADO Den Haag, who dropped to fifth position as a result.

In the same vein, Premier League leaders PSV, playing away against NEC, failed to rack in two extra points after drawing 2-2. Having led 2-1 for most of the match, Ramon Zomer managed to score the equaliser the game's very last minute. PSV are now just one point ahead of FC Twente and three clear of Ajax.
