Football: FC Twente still in the running

Published on 5 March 2011 - 11:25pm
More about:

FC Twente remain in the running for the title after securing a 2-0 home victory over NAC Breda. In their last two fixtures, the Enschede squad had lost points, first in a 1-1 home draw with NEC and then in a 2-1 away defeat against AZ. Luuk de Jong scored on 61 minutes, with Nacer Chadli netting the second goal in injury time.

ADO Den Haag have climbed up to fourth place following a massive 5-1 victory over NEC, bringing their total number of points to 45. They are now one point ahead of FC Groningen and two ahead of AZ, who are playing on Sunday.

Lex Immers, Dimitri Boelikin (penalty), Wesley Verhoek, Jens Toornstra and replacement Jordy Brouwer scored for ADO Den Haag, while Björn Vleminckx netted NEC's only goal. NEC ended with a man down after Niki Zimling was shown a red card.

Vitesse secured an important 2-0 home victory over VVV-Venlo, which should help them regain their confidence after last week's 6-1 thrashing playing away against Heracles Almelo. The first goal was scored by Marco van Ginkel shortly after half-time, with a pass by Ismail Aissati veering off VVV full-back Ferry de Regt resulting in 2-0 in injury time.

After a hectic final phase, Premier League leaders PSV beat Excelsior 3-2, maintaining their three-point advantage over FC Twente. Both teams were given penalties in the final fase. On 90 minutes, Edwin de Graaf missed his, but in injury time PSV's Balázs Dzsudzsák did convertd his. In the first half, Guyon Fernandez had taken the lead for Excelsior, while Jeremain Lens and Atiba Hutchinson scored for PSV just after half-time.
