Firefighters still hosing down peatland fire

Published on 4 June 2011 - 7:55pm
More about:

Firefighters in the eastern region of Twente say they expect to need another full day to extinguish the moorland fire that began on Friday.

Since then, the fire near the town of Enschede has destroyed over 100 hectares of peatland, 30 of them across the German border, where the blaze is still raging though not spreading.

Working in shifts, 75 firefighters using 12 engines have been battling the blaze nearly round the clock.

Most of the fire was brought under control on Friday evening and hasn’t flared up since then but it is still smoldering and therefore needs to be dampened down.

The hosing down will stop at 22:00 on Saturday to resume at 05:00 on Sunday.
