FC Twente lose against Spurs and referee

Published on 29 September 2010 - 11:23pm
More about:

Tottenham Hotspur have won 4-1 against FC Twente in a Champions League group A match at Whitehart Lane.

The London club have suffered a long list of injuries recently, but that did not dampen the action on the field. In spite of good play, Michel Preud'homme’s Twente mainly lost to Norwegian referee Terje Hauge, who gave the home club no fewer than three penalties. He also failed to award Twente a penalty later in the match and send off Tom Huddlestone for elbowingd Twente’s striker Marc Janko.

An early goal attempt by FC Twente’s Bryan Ruiz was saved by Tottenham’s Heurelho Gomez. Likewise Twente’s Nikolai Michailov brilliantly saved a penalty taken by Tottenham’s Rafael van der Vaart in the first half.

The game picked up in the second half. Just after the break Van der Vaart scored the first goal of the match. Only minutes later, Roman Pavlyuchenko put the second ball in the net after Tottenham was given its second penalty, in what observers believe was the only justified penalty of the game.

The Dutch team soon came back into the game with substitute Nacer Chadli scoring. Tottenham were one man down half and hour before the end of the game when Van der Vaart was shown his second yellow card and sent off for a foul. However minutes later, Tottenham’s Pavlyuchenko scored another penalty.

Just five minutes before the whistle Spurs sealed its victory after Gareth Bale scored the fourth goal for the home team.
