ExxonMobil staff mark World Malaria Day

Published on 25 April 2011 - 11:55am
More about:

The Benelux branch of ExxonMobil has donated 25,000 dollars to combat malaria in Africa to mark World Malaria Day. The money was raised last week by the company's Dutch and Belgian staff during the "Antwerp 10 miles" run.

Every year, 243 million people become infected with malaria. Although the illness can be treated easily, almost 2,500 people die of the disease every day. Children in remote areas of Africa are especially vulnerable.

The Drive Against Malaria charity educates people in the affected regions about the disease and hands out malaria nets, medicine and medical equipment.

"In recent months, we've been working in the Central African Republic and Cameroon. It is overwhelming how grateful people are,"says Julia Samuel one of the charity's founders.

Since 2000, ExxonMobil has donated more than 100 million dollars to anti-malaria projects across the world.
