Dutch railway network NS announced on Monday morning it intended running more trains to the popular coastal resort of Zandvoort as crowds flocked to the seaside to cool off during the bank holiday’s scorching temperatures.
Twice as many trains have been scheduled between the city of Haarlem and Zandvoort.
On Sunday, traffic on the motorways and provincial roads leading to the coast came to a halt at the end of the morning. Dutch motoring association ANWB expected similar scenes on Monday and the police urged people to travel by train instead.
The Netherlands basked in summer weather over the bank holiday weekend, as temperatures rose to over 30 degrees on Sunday. On Tuesday, temperatures are expected to drop to 19 degrees.
