European Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding has warned the Netherlands to respect the EU guidelines about the free passage of persons.
She was referring to the plans of Dutch Social Affairs Minister Henk Kamp to send home unemployed Polish nationals who apply for social security benefit or who cause any trouble.
If the Netherlands does not observe the guidelines, she said, the European Commission will give a "loud and clear" signal. She added "All member states are equal and the rules are clear".
A spokesperson for the commissioner said she has not taken any action against the Netherlands yet since the plans are still only plans.
