EU slams Dutch immigration policy

Published on 29 February 2012 - 8:05pm
More about:

The European Commission is threatening Dutch Social Affairs Minister Henk Kamp and Asylum and Immigration Minister Gerd Leers with legal action. Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad reports that they have been told to amend the government’s new immigration legislation.

Under the new rules, the Netherlands can expel EU citizens after just three months. This contravenes European law which allows migrants at least six months in which to find work or prove they can find work in the near future.

The European Commission also objects to the plans to deny EU citizens social security benefits if they work in the Netherlands but live elsewhere. European rules give people living outside the borders of a member state the right to social and fiscal benefits.

The NRC has a letter stating Brussels’ objections and apparently sent late last year. It was signed by European justice commissioner Viviane Reding and employment commissioner Laszlo Andor.
