The European Union has urged the Netherlands to ban overly small and inadequate cages for battery hens. Brussels has reminded the Dutch government of the ban on specific types of battery cages which took effect on 1 January 2012.
On Thursday the European Commission (EC) also rapped 12 other countries on the knuckles. EU Member States have had 12 years to replace the outdated cages. Despite repeated calls the 13 states in question have refused to comply fully with the European legislation, said the EC.
Brussels believes that each bird should have access to a cage with a surface area of more than 750 square centimetres. Also, each hen should have a laying nest, litter, perch and a facility to counter the growth of nails. The EU says this will ensure that every bird can develop normally.
Brussels considers it important that all countries carry out their responsibilities. This is not only for the good of the hens, but also to avoid unfair competition within the EU.
