Dutchwoman Vos wins cycling gold

Published on 26 March 2011 - 9:44pm
More about:

Marianne Vos of the Netherlands has won gold at the world track cycling championships in Apeldoorn.

Katherine Bates of Australia finished second in the 10 km event, with Britain's Danielle King claiming the bronze medal. This scratch event is not one of the five Olympic track disciplines.

For much of the race Vos trailed the lead pack by around 100 metres. But half a lap before the finish, she launched a fierce attack, ending several bicycle lengths ahead of her nearest pursuer.
