Dutch musician Leon Yap has won the Underground Music Award, presented in New York on Sunday. With his number 'Say Yes' the 32-year-old musician from Rotterdam captured the most votes. The prize is seen as the Grammy of underground urban music.
Yap was the first European to win the award. A risk management consultant by day, he has also been a creative force on the Dutch contemporary R&B scene for the past decade. In 2010, he began winning acclaim in the US.
The musician said he never could have dreamed he would be performing at the B.B. King Blues Club in Times Square last weekend. A year ago, he didn’t consider his music “good enough”.
