Dutchman extradited to Bolivia

Published on 26 August 2011 - 9:22am
More about:

A 35-year-old Dutchman has been extradited from Peru to Bolivia. Patrick van den Berg is suspected of murdering his 29-year-old wife and six-month old child according to the Bolivian newspaper La Prensa.

The suspect not only denies the murders, he also allegedly denies that the victims are his wife and child.

Patrick van den Berg was on an Interpol list for the double murder. Bolivia had been searching for him since 2008, after the bodies of his wife and child were discovered.

According to La Prensa, the Chilean police also suspect Mr van den Berg of murdering a woman believed to be his girlfriend.

According to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's Peruvian reporter Mariano Rosales, Mr van den Berg has been in trouble with the police before. He was arrested in March 2009 in Inc – around 300 kilometre south of Lima – and held in prison for one year for aggressive behaviour and throwing stones at passers-by.

Peruvians who know him describe the man as a schizophrenic. A former employer described him as a quiet man who kept to himself. Mr van den Berg also apparently told this employer he had lost his identity papers.
