Dutchman arrested in Germany with qat haul

Published on 15 January 2012 - 12:53pm
More about:

A Dutchman has been arrested in Germany for transporting 500 kilos of qat, a drug popular with Somali and Ethiopian immigrants.

The 42-year-old man was driving between the northwestern cities of Hanover and Hamburg, when he was stopped by police. The man fled but was later arrested. He was injured and has been taken to hospital.

The car he was driving was packed with 500 kilos of qat. The Dutchman said the stash was bound for Denmark. Earlier this month another Dutchman, aged 28, was arrested in northwestern Germany for transporting 1,700 kilos of qat.

Qat is banned in several European countries including Germany but not in the Netherlands. Earlier this week the Dutch government announced its intention to  ban the drug saying it is addictive and damages physical and mental health.
