Prime Minister Mark Rutte has told MPs the Dutch government is worried about the delay to dealing with the European debt crisis and the rescue of Greece which could be caused by plans for a Greek referendum on the issue.

Earlier on Tuesday, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou announced he would hold a plebiscite on the agreement for a bailout for Greece reached last week at the European Union summit.

The news has also adversely affected the markets, with Amsterdam’s AEX index closing 3.7 down. Other European stock exchanges also suffered following the Greek announcement. Banks and insurance companies were the hardest hit because of their exposure to debt in weak Eurozone countries.
