Dutch village to hire Twitter fake

Published on 13 October 2010 - 11:30am
More about:

A man who has been mysteriously posing on Twitter as the official voice of a small Dutch municipality has finally been unmasked. A spokeswoman for the municipality of Reimerswaal in the southern province of Zeeland says the man has been issuing tweets on the microblogging website using the official council logo.

The local council has been desperately trying to hunt down the fake Twitterer. Not that the phoney was out to make Reimerswaal look bad – in fact all the information he posted on the municipality’s behalf was perfectly correct.

It turns out the man behind the tweets owns an advertising agency and gives workshops on how to use Twitter. And he did such a good job of managing their Twitter account, Reimerswaal council is now considering hiring in his services.

Twitter has been flooded with fake accounts, usually rather more widely known than a cluster of sleepy Dutch villages. Fake Twitterers typically pretend to be celebrities or even companies. Victims have included oil giant BP and politicians ranging from Condoleezza Rice to Vladimir Putin.
