Dutch Uruzgan mission was a success

Published on 28 September 2011 - 11:07pm
More about:

The Dutch mission in the Afghan province of Uruzgan has produced visible results, according to a government report.

“The security situation in Uruzgan gradually improved during the Dutch operation in the NATO ISAF mission between 2006 and 2010. There is more economic activity and the functioning of government has improved,” the cabinet says in the report. Many children now receive a better education than four years ago and health care in the province has also improved. The region is also better accessible than before.

However, four years was too short to make the local authorities completely independent with regard to governance and development. “The improvements are not irreversible.'' The mission laid a good basis for the Americans and Australians who took over from the Dutch. Lessons have also been learnt from the mission.

Dutch troops and police are currently taking part in a police training mission in the Afghan province of Kunduz.
