Dutch University in equality row

Published on 29 December 2011 - 11:28am
More about:

The University of Groningen has been reprimanded by the Equal Opportunities Commission for its decision to appoint 12 female professors.

The university created special professorial posts which were only available to women senior university lecturers. The equality commission ruled that men should also have been able to apply for the new jobs.

The newly appointed female professors will not be asked to resign, but the university has announced it will change its appointment procedures.

Groningen student union chair Marlinde Gras said: "The university is doing its best to give women an honest chance, but this time they've really gone too far".

The student union has consistently opposed the appointments, and argues that there should instead be more structural measures to increase the number of women in top positions. One of the proposed measures would enable women to work part-time in senior positions.
