Dutch union federation pension talks stall

Published on 10 May 2011 - 8:53am
More about:

The FNV trades union federation has suspended talks on pension reform with its 19 affiliated unions. The negotiations were stopped in the early hours of Tuesday after 10 hours.

The talks had been expected to last just five or six hours. However, the affiliated unions failed to agree on a position the FNV should adopt in negotiations on pension reforms with the government and employers. The reforms will include raising the age at which people in the Netherlands can receive state pensions.

The FNV’s main demand is that people have security about how much their pensions will be worth when they retire. The biggest union affiliated to the FNV believes the broad agreement reached earlier by the FNV, the government and employers failed to offer this security.
