The Dutch government has decided to suspend 3.2 million euros of aid support for Uganda because of the lack of progress in its efforts to tackle corruption. The money was intended to supplement the budget of the Ugandan justice system.

In the weeks to come the government will also be looking critically at other uses of Dutch development aid in Uganda.

A total of eight million euros was originally earmarked for the Ugandan justice system, of which 4.8 million was transferred during 2010.

Two weeks ago the Dutch ambassador wrote to the Ugandan Secretary to the Treasury Chris Kassami:

"I am sorry to have to inform you that the Netherlands is not able to pay out the second part of the sum. The evaluation of Uganda's anti-corruption campaign concluded that Uganda has failed to meet the requisite conditions for the second year running."
