Dutch support sanctions against Syria

Published on 18 July 2011 - 5:56pm
More about:

The Netherlands wants additional sanctions imposed against Syria. Dutch Deputy Foreign Minister Ben Knapen made calls on Monday for actions against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

"President al-Assad must stop the repression now and start real democratic reforms or relinquish power,” said Mr Knapen, stressing that the Netherland and the international community support the Syrian people.

EU foreign ministers met in Brussels Monday to discuss tightening sanctions against the country. The EU has already frozen European assets of several Syrian individuals and businesses. A ban on Syrians travelling to Europe has also been imposed.

Since March, demonstrations from anti-government groups calling for greater democratic freedoms and President al-Assad’s resignation have been met with violence. More than 1,400 civilian deaths have been reported.
