Fifteen-year-old student Imane Mahssan from the Dutch town of Volendam has taken her school to court over its headscarf ban.
In February of last year, Imane asked the school management for permission to wear a headscarf. When she received no reply, she decided to start wearing a headscarf in school at the start of the new school year.
The school reacted by imposing a ban, after which Imane filed a complaint with the Commissie Gelijke Behandeling (Equal Treatment Commission). The Commissie ruled in her favour on 7 January, but the school has maintained its ban.
