Tens of thousands of ice-skating aficionados took part in one of more than 100 skating tours organised across the Netherlands on Saturday.
A spokesperson for the national ice-skating union KNSB said “It was an unprecedented day for ice skating. All KNSB tours attracted huge crowds; the Westland Tour in South Holland province saw more than 70,000 people take part.”
About 130 skating tours had been organised across the Netherlands. The KNSB spokesperson was unable to give a definitive number about how many people in total had taken part in KNSB skating tours.
Meteorologists predict a thaw will set in on Sunday afternoon accompanied by snowfall and rain, which could cause hazardous traffic conditions as road surfaces are still frozen.
