Dutch sailor girl's mother OKs solo trip

Published on 17 July 2010 - 9:41am
More about:

The mother of 14-year-old Laura Dekker has dropped her objections to her daughter's plan to sail the world alone.

Writing to daily AD, the Dutch sailor girl's mother Babs Müller states that her daughter should be given the opportunity to realise "her dream" of becoming the youngest girl ever to sail solo around the world.

It is not immediately clear why Ms Müller changed her mind, after she wrote to another daily last year that she was opposed to her daughter's plan. She now accuses the Dutch Child Care Bureau and the Child Protection agency of being "criminal organisations", adding that "the pressure of all those court cases [...] should be over, because Laura is not a criminal, all she wants is to set sail".

Laura is currently a ward of the Child Care Agency and living with her father. Her parents are divorced. A court in the western city of Middelburg will review Laura's case on Tuesday.
