Published on 26 October 2010 - 7:59pm
More about:

Queen Beatrix paid a visit to the European Commission in Brussels today at the invitation of EU President José Manuel Barroso. The Queen was joined for lunch by compatriot and European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes.

The Dutch monarch also held talks with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy. She was brought up to date on the status of European integration following the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by all 27 member states. The Lisbon Treaty forms the constitutional basis of the EU and went into effect on 1 December 2009.

Later in the day Queen Beatrix attended the official opening of the new Dutch embassy in Brussels. Permanent staff representing the Netherlands in the European Parliament will also be stationed in the new building, which is close to the Commission's headquarters.
