Dutch province lowest EU jobless rate

Published on 25 November 2011 - 6:19pm
More about:

The Dutch province of Zeeland and the northern Italian region of Bolzano had the lowest unemployment rate of any European Union region in 2010, according to the EU statistics agency.

Both regions had an unemployment rate of 2.7 percent in 2010, according to a Eurostat survey of the EU’s 271 regions.

Regional unemployment rates varied widely. Regions in the Netherlands, which has low unemployment, did mostly well. In Spain, where 23 percent have no jobs, nine regions had unemployment rates ranging between 24 and 29 percent. Andalusia and the Canary islands had the worst rates. The French Overseas Department of Réunion had a rate of 28.9 percent.

Measured by age, the results yield a different map. Youth unemployment was the lowest in three German regions, and the highest in three French overseas regions in the Caribbean and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in Morocco, where 60 percent of youngsters are without work.
