Dutch premier league roundup: AZ hold lead

Published on 2 October 2011 - 5:12pm
More about:

AZ easily held on to its position at the top of the Eredivisie, the Dutch Premier League, with a 3-1 win against number 17 VVV in Venlo.

Rasmus Elm scored the first goal from a free kick 30 minutes into the match, and Adam Maher and Simon Poulson took the score to 3-0 before Robert Cullen recouped a little of the home team’s honour with a goal in the final minutes.

Rotterdam club Feyenoord lost for the second time in a row, suffering a painful 0-3 defeat against ADO Den Haag. It’s the first time in five years that ADO has managed to take down Feyenoord on its home turf.

Last year’s Eredivisie champions Ajax lost to FC Groningen 1-0. The Amsterdam club has lost five of its last six matches and now trails six points behind AZ at the top of the league. The two teams will clash in a fortnight in Amsterdam – luckily for Ajax, because the club has now lost nine away matches in a row.
