The Dutch police union ACP wants to know what the cabinet is doing to protect the police training officers currently working in Afghanistan.

The security situation in Afghanistan deteriorated after news was released that the US military accidentally burned Islamic religious material last week. Afghans took to the streets and there has been widespread violence. More than 30 people have been killed over the last five days and a Taliban suicide car bombing on Monday killed at least nine people and injured 10 others at Jalalabad airport in the east of the country.

Security in the capital Kabul and in the province of Kunduz, where Dutch police trainers are stationed, is particularly perilous. According to ACP chair Gerrit Van de Kamp, the union was in touch with the ministry of security and justice at the weekend. All Dutch police personnel in Afghanistan withdrew to their bases as the violence spread.

The Dutch personnel are safe at the moment and all training has been cancelled due to the security situation. Mr Van de Kamp wants to know what the government intends to do if the situation gets worse.
