'Dutch police training mission to Kunduz will cost lives'

Published on 23 January 2011 - 9:39pm
More about:

A senior Afghan police commander has warned the Netherlands that a police training mission to the province of Kunduz will cost lives.

In an interview with the Dutch news channel RTL Nieuws on Sunday, senior Kunduz police commander Abdul Rahman Aqtash warned that each year dozens of police officers and other security personnel are killed in the province. "It is war" Commander Aqtash said. He also said that foreign soldiers are fighting for the Taliban.

On Monday, parliament will hear Afghan and Dutch officials and experts on the government proposal to send 545 police and army trainers to Afghanistan. The Freedom Party, Labour Party and Socialist Party are strongly opposed to the plan.

For a majority in parliament, the cabinet will need the support of the Democrat party D66, the Christian Union and the Green Left. The opposition to the proposed mission is strongest in the latter party, but two-thirds of the Christian Union membership is also against a new mission.
